Magician's Journey:

Chapter 44

“{Wait… that’s it? That’s all?}” Thomas reluctantly started to stand up. “{You’re going to pass me? But… But I…}” He retreated back down, pulling his head into his shirt. “{I’ve only been here for half a day… and I- I’ve… barely done anything.}”
Maeve tried her best to smile reassuringly, though it came off as forced. “{Don’t worry yourself about it. I get that it’s normal for journeymen t’ stick ‘round for at least a few seasons… but it’d probably be best t’ let your victory settle in a tad. You’ve got the principles down good… enough. All you need is t’ let your ego grow a wee bit.}” She paused. “{Or maybe a large bit. Medium bit. Let your little ego grow a medium bit.}”
Thomas poked his head out of his shirt. “{Really…? Are you sure?}”
“{Yes! Yes I am sure! I mean, maybe part o’ it’s that I hate teaching people – but you’ll do fine. I got a prophecy about it.}” Maeve stopped, waiting for her brain to catch up with her mouth. “{Now, before you say anything, no I don’t know divination. I got the prophecy from Erline. Every month, give or take a bit, she sends me a couple dozen o’ the things. Like this weird one about what I would have for lunch. Was made with cheese and tomato, or somethin’. Neither o’ us really knew what it was, and I hate that self-fulfilling shite, but it did sound pretty nice… Didn’t taste nice, but it sounded nice. Still a little peeved about that, really.}”
“{I see…}” Thomas’s eyes wandered toward the ground. “{Maeve, are you-}”
“{I swear t’ all that is good and magical if you ask me whether I’m ‘truly sure’ or some shite I will drop kick you.}”
“{I was actually just going to ask if you were aware of a way to get back to Britannia that wouldn’t scare Pallo. She doesn’t seem fond of boats, flying, or teleportation.}”
“{Oh.}” Maeve blushed slightly. “{Sorry.}” She tilted her head. “{Wait, couldn’t you just walk?}”
“{Usually, I would. There is, however, quite a lot of ocean between here and Britannia.}”
Maeve blinked, genuinely confused. “{And?}”

A note from the author ninja:

One of the reasons that Maeve is on such good terms with the elements, is that she thinks a bit like them herself. She has little to no tolerance for hesitancy, uncertainty, or any other kind of indecisiveness – be it in herself or others. While this helps her act quickly and confidently in most situations, it will also occasionally lead to her becoming frustrated with herself and acting on instinct whenever it takes too long to come up with a more intelligent solution.
