Magician's Journey:

Chapter 9

Thomas felt a gentle shove on his cheek, nudging him into a state that resembled consciousness.
“Just half a candle more, Pallo. We had a late night yesterday.” No response. How odd. “Pallo?”
Still no response.
Thomas tilted himself over onto his side, peeling his eyes open to take a look at his surroundings. A task he completed just in time to see several small figures flit away and out of sight. It seemed the local sprites still didn’t trust him.
Thomas dragged himself upright, glancing around the rooftop he’d been sleeping on. “You here, Pallo?”
<I take back everything I have ever said about faeries.> Thomas turned around, finding Pallo behind him staring eagerly down at a whole haunch of pork. <May we eat now?>
“Pretty sure those were brownies, Pallo.” Thomas stretched his arms, glancing out around the rooftops he had been sleeping on. The sun was about halfway up towards the middle of the sky, which meant Thomas had slept in quite late. It was unavoidable, considering he hadn’t gotten to the city until a few candles before morning.
<Thomas…?> Pallo tilted her head expectantly.
“Oh, sorry Pallo. Go ahead and eat without me, I’m planning to grab some fresh bread from the baker for breakfast. I haven’t had any town food since I was a small child.”
No response. Pallo was far too busy tearing into her meal.
“Ah, Pallo. You never fail to treat every meal as if it were an autumn feast.” Thomas turned to his bag, which he had been using as a pillow. “Speaking of which, we should probably give those brownies a thank you gift.” Thomas pulled open his bag, rummaging through in search of anything edible. “A-ha! A jar of honey and some mint leaves, perfect! Now we just need to take a dab or two of honey, wrap it in one of the leaves… Repeat the process two more times… Put my bag back in order, and… poof! Three of a brownie’s favorite treat!”
<It smells disgusting.>
“That’s because you’re a carnivore. Anyway, you ready to get on with our day?”
<Indeed. The bulk of the meat is gone. I would like to keep the bone though, it is still full of glorious marrow.> Pallo licked her chops excitedly, as her tail wagged so hard Thomas swore she was about to take flight. <I love marrow.>
Thomas smiled. “No problem, Pallo. Just give me the bone, and I’ll carve out the marrow for you later. Plus, we can use the inedible parts for bone meal. That stuff has plenty of uses.”
<I am deeply grateful. Your ‘fingers’ are very convenient at times like these.> Pallo dropped her bone in front of Thomas. <While we are discussing plans, do you mind telling me yours for today?>
“Oh, nothing much Pallo. Just a bit of alchemy, trading some potions for gold and supplies, trying out the local specialties… Oh, and we need to find…” Thomas paused briefly, lost in thought. “Sylvester! That was his name! We need to find Sylvester, so that I can become an official magician, and not just a journeyman.”

A note from the author ninja:

Nothing much to say about today’s chapter. So how about a quick little bit of trivia?

In the world of Magician’s Journey, the idea of monotheism doesn’t begin to spread until the early renaissance. It’s also around that time that magicians start to really separate themselves from normal humans, eventually fading into myth and superstition.
