Dreamwalkers:

Chapter 49

“Wait, you’re not leaving without eating breakfast, are you honey?” A dissatisfied frown crossed Tully’s face. “It’s the most important meal of the day!”
“What are you talking about?” Kayleigh held up her box of Pop-Tarts. “See, I’ve got breakfast right here.”
“That’s… that’s not…” Tully sighed. “You can’t just eat a box of cheap pastries and call it a meal…”
“Isn’t that basically what pancakes are?” Kayleigh shrugged and started to open the front door to her house. “Besides, I have a big day – no time for a full meal right now.”
“I’ll have you know, I go to great effort to make sure that my pancakes are more than just carbs and sugars. And while it may be fine to skip a meal once or twice, you’ve been eating poorly for a week now and I’m starting to get – hey! I’m still talking!”
Kay stood halfway through the door, a sheepish smirk resting on her face. “I know, but I really do have to go…”
“I… Okay…” For a second, Tully stood in defeated silence, but a sly grin quickly sprouted on his face. “…but don’t say I didn’t warn you when your case goes south. It would be a real shame if you lost because your brain didn’t have the -”
“Ahp-up! I know what you’re trying to do! But appealing to my competitive side won’t put more hours in the…” Kayleigh paused. “Aw, come on! Not the puppy dog eyes! You know I – Oh, fine! I’ll grab a banana from the break room, and snack on peanuts in the car. Is that good enough for you?”
Tully grinned. “As long as you eat a good lunch.”
“After my wonderful husband went to the effort of packing me lunch? How could I not?” Kayleigh bolted out the door. “Bye, Tully honey!”
“Bye Kay-kay! Don’t stay out too late, my father’s coming to visit tonight!” A smile crossed Tully’s face as he turned back toward the kitchen to finish up making breakfast. It wasn’t often he got to see his dad in person anymore. Ever since the old man had been hit with a second mid-life crisis and decided to tour America, he’d always been a state or two away. Tully was going to enjoy seeing him – “Wait. I didn’t pack Kay a lunch today.” Tully glanced toward the spot where he’d put his lunch, the one he’d planned to eat while running errands today. Sure enough, it was gone. “Ah. Well. I was in the mood for Grill Tyrant today anyway.”

A note from the author ninja:

Tully isn’t kidding, he puts a lot of effort into his kids pancakes. He has a special recipe for each of them. Peanut butter hero-cakes for Andie (topped with berries), pretty princess pancakes for Chloe (yogurt and rainbow sprinkles), and spiced swirl pancakes for Connor.
